DOES THE GENERAL PUBLIC KNOW WHAT ART IS?

Everyone in the world seems to know what art is, but no one can point to a Titian and enunciate to me what exactly makes it great. Let’s face it, when you say you like art, therefore it follows that you know what art is– excuse me–you are just lying flat-face to yourself. It does not bother you at all for this self-deception because art has so insignificant a role to play in your life, and lying about it makes you look, and probably feel good when among your peers!

Art is so difficult a subject that it takes the mind of a genius to fully comprehend it. It would take a master to produce art– from nothing. I hope to put this argument of what art is to rest by pointing this out, by way of dissuading any similar future debate another fool has the audacity to bring along as if he knows what art is already.

The chance is, the whole world know next to nothing about art other than the peripheral stuffs. They want to debate the Alpha Seer because their self-delusion is so blinding that it leads them to think they surely have something under their belts after a lifetime of listening to the art professors and visiting galleries. They want to impress anyone in their path what information they have amassed about art in their lifetimes. Unfortunately, those remain just ordinary superficial information, nothing else!

When they cannot produce the proof, i.e., the specific reasons why a Titian composition is great, they always retreat by saying, ” Beauty is in the eyes of the beholders!” in order to save face. When a person holds on to such an attitude, he misses out on the chance of acquiring real knowledge.

You know who I think is a good art student? Someone who learns by opening his ears, his heart and mind, not his mouth! Such a student is a good art student because he can finally learn something he has known absolutely nothing about. A person of great wisdom can understand the benefit of silence when it comes to hearing about a topic of great murkiness. A wise person always seek enlightenment. Art is the last frontier for a superior mind. Art involves so much logical thinking! Art may be the bona-fide genius’ pet, but it is the last frontier for the vast majority of people. So unless your artistic mind is in the extremely rare (1 in 10 billion) percentile, don’t tell me you know what art is, because I can immediately call your bluff! By proclaiming you know art is just a self-delusion in life that you are not ready to admit.

There is the myth that art can raise a person from the gutter, make him/her a better person, comfort ones frayed spirit, etc. Too good to be true! If you really believe that, you should not have come to the Alpha Seer at all. You should have gone to a psychiatrist or a healthy living trainer instead. Art has very little comfort for your frayed spirit. Neither can art make you any better than you already are. Art is just a specific kind of design/ metaphorical invention for the divine pleasure of a specific kind of, and extremely limited number of people. These are those who can be fascinated by the beauty of the physical form, generally speaking. Art is in truth not for the consumption of the sensation-seeking public!

A great work of art only comes into being after it has been fully examined. Anything less than perfect won’t make the grade, and won’t allow it to play in the big leagues. There is a big league of great masters, just so you know. It is the unique league of Van Eyck, Titian, Velazquez, Zurburan, Rubens, Frans Hals, Adrian Brouwer, Ingres, Degas, Manet, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, deKooning, Gorky, and Knox Martin. Before them were the African art, the Egyptian Art, the Greek Art, the Islamic Art, the Medieval Art, and the ancient Oriental Art! They are the best of the best. If an art student does not learn art from the best of the best- but instead he goes to the beggarly academia, pays a handsome sum enough to bankrupt his dad, in order to “learn art” and become an artist, l can tell you immediately that he will be doomed forever, like every single art student I have come to know so far! I can tell you immediately that we have the case of a very stupid young person standing before us!

If you know the art of painting, you will know what it means to be a perfect composition. So clearly you have so far pretended you know! And if you persist on doing so, there is no one to blame but yourself, since you remain unenlightened. You would not pretend to be holding an Ace to me when in fact you have a bad hand, would you? It is criminal for anyone to pretend he knows art, according to the great master Knox Martin!

The following consecutive pictures show you what can be done to make a composition perfect. Examine the changes made to the first painting and try to understand why those changes are necessary. You may of course ask the Alpha Seer, but you must not continue to pretend you have the answer– because you really have none!

CALLIGRAPHY AND PAINTING FLOW FROM ONE ORIGIN

善書者皆知王羲之書帖舉世無敵。何解?因其書法圓潤有力,佈局精湛超凡。字字之間,極有行氣,筆筆之處,常讚神妙。结構嚴謹有儀。意象華美秀麗。收放必能自如。其收也,如霸王坐陣,豪氣迫人,其放耶?若仙女散花,漂逸無極。贵而不凡,不食人间烟火!

今之世变。不爱師古,擅作主张,自圓其說,思绪浮亂,放浪形骸,好醜不識,大體不明,胡亂認同學苑之所謂教授,崇尚跟風,人云亦云。但見有人掛著耶魯、哈佛大學之銜,便不假思索,意亂情迷,甘投門下,寧為婢僕,妄自菲薄,目光如豆,甘作跟隊小羊,任人擺佈。

世人不知眾生皆有慧根,審美之道,只存於一心。天地悠悠,以正心為上。須知甘心受人愚弄,難逃騙網,當世之人宜重返正軌,以審心為上上計,明白書畫必有同源之理!何謂審心?以心為主,假觀評書畫之道於明心見性之理,是審心之謂也!

當代騙徒如Andy Warhol, Damien Horst, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Bacon, Frida Kahlo 等頗有十萬之眾。異端邪說,常使人迷惑。魚目混珠,羊頭賣狗。從此藝術之綱紀頓失。藝術之源斷絕。世人又常迷無明之士,輕信虛妄之説。無術無才之輩,隨便詐搆形象,又胡亂掛個意念,便妄云繪畫藝術,妖言惑眾,指鹿為馬。使有識者頓覺汗顔。

故鄙人曰: 真金不畏火煉。又曰:能閃爍者,未必是金!

乎觀評之道、皆存於心。觀評之始,亦贵乎心靜。所謂寧静足以致逺也。

畫有畫之自性, 以下作品,以黑白為主,皆係自性最终極之表現!故善觀評書畫者,須由此而入。須由心而入。宜作明心見性為旨。知道心外無法之理。觀評畫作,先正心靜意,與觀評書道並無二致!

贊曰: 世有王羲之之天才然后始知書法之準繩。世有鐵順(Titian) 之藝術天才然后始悟藝術之纲纪,故古人有云:微斯人,吾誰與歸?

VIEWING THE SELF-NATURE OF A COMPOSITION

IMG_0875IMG_0882This recent work, called Satyr and Nymph series by Ben Lau, is not an easy one to digest. It is to be expected, as most folks only view things in a piecemeal manner. Viewing art, it is important to take in the self- nature / the soul, of the composition all at once. Let not the narrative or the coloration distract you, as after all, the narrative or the coloration are just excuses, no more! They are just some sort of vehicles for the composition to come into existence. They are the circumstantial elements . They are not “the thing! ”

How to take in the self- nature of the composition all at once? I have spoken on this topic many times on www.thealphaseer.com ( thanks to my dear friend Billy Zhou in keeping it up for mankind!) The best technique is just narrowing your eyes when you are viewing the composition. By narrowing, you relax the focus of your vision field . Why do we need to widen the vision field? It is to make sure we are not looking at a particular point on the surface of the composition, so we can determine the entire white at a glance. In a similar way, try to also obtain the shape of the total black at a glance. If you are able to see those two great structures, congratulate yourself, buy yourself a good dinner to celebrate this triumph tonight, because you are face to face with the self-nature, or the soul, of the composition. The self-nature of a masterpiece will not lie to you. It is right here, right now. It will continue to be there in a million years. It will still be relevant after a million years! But that statement is not easily understood unless you have an extraordinary I. Q. !

To give you a deepen sense of this love for the great black and white structures I am showing another composition. On the right is a masterpiece by the great Knox Martin. Knox is inspired by African masks. That is a fact speaking loud and clear here. What the great master is doing here, my friends, is baring the self-nature/ soul of his composition to you! He is baring it without reservation, totally without the camouflage of coloration or emotion or narrative. If you are able to see his great black (1) and white (1) structures, congratulate yourself: you are on the right track– face to face with the self-nature/ soul of his composition. You are staring down into the soul of artistic greatness!

Artistic geniuses are so rare that they are one in a billion in each era. IN the 19th Century, we only have Ingres, Manet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Juan Gris, and Seurat. In the 20th Century, we only have Gorky, de Kooning, Knox Martin etc. They can certainly not be found everywhere,–at least not in our current bustling postmodern art market! A no-talent painter such as Marcel Duchamp does not have a soul to offer to the world. If one is a mediocre artist, the soul being offered is likewise mediocre, random and confused. Only an artistic genius, a bona-fide artist, can express his/ her soul loud and clear with lucidity and power! A bona-fide genius has no need to charm you, or mesmerize your emotions. If you can recall the following people’s works and you will know exactly what I mean. Frida Kahlo, Munch, Norman Rockwell, Monet, Pollock, Pissarro, Damien Hirsts, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, as well as about 10 thousand other so-called artists are no-talent impostors. All they can offer are gimmicks and narratives. I am not attacking them at all, just pointing out the truth! If you have loved them before–why? no one is stopping you from that! Continue to do so since they seem to turn you on–which is certainly not a bad thing… . But I don’t envy you, since you won’t be able to get a full taste for greatness owing to your self-inflicted lock-down of your own vision. If you have become open-minded in the wrong way, there is no help, since all that glitters are not gold!

Hopefully at some point in time you will thank me for letting you know this particular trade secret of the bona-fide artistic geniuses. Hopefully one day you will be grateful to me in helping to awaken your own soul to the joy of artistic greatness! That’s why I am still here, writing this blog,  and offering to you free access to art appreciation– the proper way to approach artistic greatness, since I really want to set you free, from the exploitations of the academics. They are charging you thousands of dollars for completely useless “art classes.”

They are the blindest fish in the water, and yet they are offering you art classes! What audacity!!!!!But you are to blame for your herd instincts. After all, it is you, with your herd instincts, who  will willingly pay them for those completely useless “art classes!”

AN INTENSIVE INSPECTION OF A NEW WORK BY THE ALPHA SEER

We need to examine a piece of new work by looking at it intensively and asking the question : “Does it deserve to be called a “masterpiece?” I have  therefore set up for you– and the as yet unborn future bona- fide artists, this exhibit (please see pictures above and below the text).

In the image below, we can see why shapes B, C, D, are to be conjoined with A to become ONE mainland after part of the black in that region is peeled away. Without this correction, we are stuck with the island, B , which fails to integrate, and the island, C, which seems unable to join the mainland designated by A.

Great masterpieces by Rembrandt, Titian, and Velazquez are placed here for your reference, and they all show the same secret. So whoever you are, however talented you may be, whether you are Titian, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Knox Martin, Picasso, Cezanne’s, or  Ben Lau–as long as you are honestly creating the painterly metaphor–HONESTLY means, 1. you, as a bona-fide artist, know exactly what you are doing when you set out to produce a true painting; 2. you are not eyeing the billionaire buyers’ pockets, but instead doing your job for the sheer love of it; 3. if you do not REALLY know something, you’d better keep quiet! ( I am referring to the academics, especially those from MCAD, Harvard and Yale!). If that is the case, then even if the entire world have forsaken thee, it still won’t matter! You are still moving in life like a boss.You are still the chosen one– being richly rewarded with the happiness of creating your painterly metaphors, knowing that it is your privilege, yours alone, to enjoy it for as long as you breathe!

Look no further than in the direction of Knox Martin. He is 94 this year, yet going strong all the way, soldiering on! You won’t see him stop for a moment.  I cannot honestly say he is a successful painter because his works have not been understood except by a few– and his works are currently selling in no more than 5 digits ( while a deKooning can easily fetch a 8 digits theses days!)

That’s my silent advice to the future bona-fide artists. And I predict there will be many more of them, and there will be as many girls as boys too!!!!!

Remember the Alpha Seer has said: NO ISLANDS, only ONE mainland is allowed?! Upon further scrutiny in the work, an outstanding island is spotted, as shown below in the middle image. It is long, so let’s call it the Long Island, denoted in the middle image as E. E is also denoted with two arrows. A third arrow is pointing to a much smaller island, denoted by F. But F is too tiny to affect the flow of the composition’s energy, so nothing needs to be done to change it. The lowest picture shows that the change have been made, which comprises in just shaving off some thickness of the line that represents the calf of the satyr.

This work is officially complete, with the lowest image being the finalized product. In a masterpiece, however,  being complete is not enough, perfection must be the goal. So further scrutiny is in order. If you don’t hear anything else from me– it means perfection has been achieved!

THE SUBJECT MATTER OF ART IS ART ITSELF

Ben Lau THE PAINTERLY METAPHOR

Music, poetry, and painting are linked by the fact that the artistic genius is creating his metaphors by different means. By means of sound, you have music. The composer creates his musical metaphor. By means of words you have poetry, the poet creates his poetic metaphor. And by means of light you have the painterly metaphor, created by the artistic genius! The painterly metaphor is created with black and white, the painterly metaphor is also created with lines and shapes. Color in painting are of course, useful, but they have only a small role to play in the creation of this painterly metaphor. Art without a metaphor is like a boat without a rudder. There is no fun in a painting without a metaphor. Look at the so-called abstract art, which emphasizes nothing but color. It is not saying anything. It is the most boring thing in the world. In a week you will grow tired of it. I guarantee that! Listen to the piano with undifferentiated sound, or sounds that suggests rhythms only, or just some sentimental tunes. You can become so bored that you will run for the door with your ears closed right away!

So Cezanne’s metaphors are found in his sceneries and still-lives, Knox Martin adopts the human face, while I opt for the Satyr and Nymph series, i.e., the legendary/ mythological sex- act. In the sex-act, two intertwined bodies provide a rich variety of shapes and lines. The possibilities in making metaphors in art through this view of the sex-act are inexhaustible. That’s why I seldom depart from such an extremely useful genre. The metaphor and the subject matter may be closely related but they are not the same. The metaphor is the soul of the work. An illustration is one in which the so-called artist is unable to find his soul. It is just a matter of imitation, an image of mediocre doodling. The fact of the matter is, only a genius can give a clear-cut metaphor, i.e. only a genius may allow his soul to show through! Mozart is a musical genius,  Shakespeare, a literary one. Is Cezanne an artistic genius? You bet!

Is Dali an artistic genius? No! Andy Warhol? No! Are the folk singers musical genius? No!  Pop singers? No! Is Walt Whitman a literary genius? No! Frida Kahlo? Norman Rockwell? Damien Hirst? Francis Bacon,…..? For Christ’s sake, No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are called impostors, or pretenders. It is not easy for the laymen to tell art apart from non-art–and because it takes another genius to tell you what a true metaphor is, who is a bona-fide and who is not, we end up with many pretenders– since it is easy money for the conmen.

The general public have mistaken deKooning’s works as abstract expressionism. It takes an artistic  genius like Knox Martin to educate us, to tell art apart from non-art, and to correct the misconception of the laymen! The general perception of deKooning’s work is so mistaken! If you look really carefully, stare at deKooning’s work for a while, trying to see what he is presenting to the artistic appetite, you will find deKooning’s metaphor of the nude staring back at you. What a surprise, since there is nothing abstract about deKooning’s works! Wilhem deKooning’s work has a soul. He uses the nude to express his metaphor. That metaphor is the soul of deKooning’s work.
Knox Martin even goes so far as to proclaim: THE SUBJECT MATTER OF ART IS ART ITSELF! I wonder how many people would understand the meaning of this statement? It sounds like an enigma, but for the real artistic genius, it is easy to decode. It simply means that the true artist does not need a subject matter, already he has art as his subject matter! When you look at my work, you are probably thinking, OK, Ben Lau’s subject matter is the sex act and we shall therefore classify Ben’s works as erotica. But that is so wrong! Art is Ben Lau’s real subject matter, nothing else is! The sex act is NOT! The sex act is just an excuse, a convenient tool for Ben Lau to express his artistic metaphor! Do not focus on the narrative of a real painting. Focus instead on the metaphor–which is a gorgeous symphony of lines and shapes, the interactions of singular or multiple visual metaphors, the visualization of which made possible through the agile placement of the black and white! Real art of our times is derived from the greatest genius of all times, Titian. He invented painting by first and foremost, asking the question: WHAT ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF OUR UNIVERSE?

The answer provided by the Alpha Seer is: YIN and YANG. Upon further examination, Yin and Yang is manifested through black and white in the art of drawing, and male and female in the realm of living being. So the sex act is not just a metaphor for Yin and Yang interactions, it is also one for the interactions in drawing, in the art of making shapes, therefore a metaphor for art itself. Next time you visit a museum, remember you are looking for metaphors. When equipped with your own intuition, you must believe in yourself. The museum curators and directors have it all wrong. They do not know sh*t about art. And I want to hear from you expressing your ultimate displeasure at those impostors and art illiterates with, “DANG, YOU GUYS CAN NO LONGER FOOL ME!!!!!!!!!”  And say it loud, by way of thanking the Alpha Seer!

THE BODHIDHARMA SPEAKS, FOLLOWED BY THE ALPHA SEER,….

THE GREAT BODHIDHARMA SPEAKS, FOLLOWED BY THE ALPHA SEER,… .

FIRST THE GREAT BODHIDHARMA SPEAKS:

Everything that appears in the three realms comes from the mind. Hence Buddhas of the past and future teach mind to mind without bothering about definitions.

Student: But if they don’t define it, what do they mean by mind?

Bodhidharma: You ask. That’s your mind. I answer. That’s my mind. If I had no mind how could I answer? If you had no mind, how could you ask? That which asks is your mind. Through endless kalpas” without beginning, whatever you do, wherever you are, that’s your real mind, that’s your real buddha. This mind is the buddha” says the same thing. Beyond this mind you’ll never find another Buddha. To search for enlightenment or nirvana beyond this mind is impossible. The reality of your own self-nature the absence of cause and effect, is what’s meant by mind. Your mind is nirvana. You might think you can find a Buddha or enlightenment somewhere beyond the mind’, but such a place doesn’t exist.

Trying to find a Buddha or enlightenment is like trying to grab space. Space has a name but no form. It’s not something you can pick up or put down. And you certainly can’t grab it. Beyond mind you’ll never see a Buddha. The Buddha is a product of the mind. Why look for a Buddha beyond this mind?

Buddhas of the past and future only talk about this mind. The mind is the Buddha, and the Buddha is the mind. Beyond the mind there’s no Buddha and beyond the Buddha there’s no mind. If you think there is a Buddha beyond the mind’, where is he? There’s no Buddha beyond the mind, so why envision one? You can’t know your real mind as long as you deceive yourself. As long as you’re enthralled by a lifeless form, you’re not free. If you don’t believe me, deceiving yourself won’t help. It’s not the Buddha’s fault. People, though, are deluded. They’re unaware that their own mind is the Buddha. Otherwise they wouldn’t look for a Buddha outside the mind.

Buddhas don’t ferry Buddhas to the shore of liberation. If you use your mind to look for a Buddha, you won’t see the Buddha. As long as you seek Buddhas outwards, you’ll never see that your own Heart is the Buddha. Don’t use a Buddha to worship a Buddha, and don’t use the mind to invoke a Buddha. Buddhas don’t recite sutras, Buddhas don’t keep precepts, and Buddhas don’t break precepts, Buddhas don’t keep or break anything. Buddhas don’t do good or evil.

To find a Buddha, you have to see your nature. Whoever sees his nature is a Buddha. If you don’t see your nature, being mindful of Buddhas, reciting sutras, making offerings, and keeping precepts are not equal to it. Being mindful of Buddhas results in good karma, reciting sutras results in a good intelligence; keeping precepts results in a good rebirth in heavens, and making offerings results in future blessings — but no buddha. If you don’t understand by yourself, you’ll have to find a teacher to know the root of births and deaths. But unless he sees his nature, such a person isn’t a good teacher. Even if he can recite the twelve groups of scriptures he can’t escape the Wheel of Births and Deaths. He suffers in the three realms without hope of release. Long ago, the monk Good Star was able to recite the twelve groups of scriptures. But he didn’t escape the Wheel, because he didn’t see his nature. If this was the case with Good Star, then people nowadays who recite a few sutras or shastras and think it’s the Dharma are fools. Unless you see your own Heart, reciting so much prose is useless.

To find a Buddha you have to see your nature directly. Your nature is the Buddha. And the Buddha is the person who’s free: free of plans, free of cares. If you don’t see your nature and run outwards to seek for external objects, you’ll never find a buddha. The truth is there’s nothing to find. But to reach such an understanding you need a good teacher and you need to struggle to make yourself understand. Life and death are important. Don’t suffer them in vain.

There’s no advantage in deceiving yourself. Even if you have mountains of jewels and as many servants as there are grains of sand along the Ganges, you see them when your eyes are open. But what about when your eyes are shut? You should realize then that everything you see is like a dream or illusion.

NOW HEAR THE ALPHA SEER SPEAK… .

Please first study the above text in depth, because it represents the Bodhidharma’s perfect understanding of the Dharma. IT ALSO REPRESENTS THE FACT THAT THE BODHIDHARMA IS A REALIZED MASTER, A TATHAGATA , ONE WHO HAS SEEN HIS TRUE SELF, OR THE SO-CALLED BUDDHA NATURE.

Seeing your mind is everything you have now. Seeing your mind is the same as seeing your own true self. It is really the only thing you have now. Why? You have come to this world with nothing, and soon you will depart with nothing too, not that you really have anything ever.

When I say it is everything you have, or that it is the only thing you really have now, all I mean to do is call your attention to a certain window of opportunity that you have all along enjoyed as human being. The window such that whatever karma has in store for you at this juncture is NEVER too wide. For most of us it only lasts an average of 85 years,– for an extraordinary being, a little longer perhaps… . Once you have breathed your last puff of air, that window of opportunity will be gone FOREVER. For that reason it is only wise to be awake to that opportunity when you still have it.

What is required of you is pretty simple in fact: see your self- nature, know your own mind! Your mind is the Buddha, so to seek outside your mind is like a crow trying to grasp at its own reflection in the well. When the crow flies away, also gone is his own reflection in the well! Seeking outside your mind is a waste of time and effort because absolutely nothing exists out there, nothing whatsoever exists outside of your mind! Everything in the whole wide world: i.e. Dharma, nirvana, samsara, joy, sorrow, Buddha, samsara, nirvana, enlightenment, defilement, the universe, the world, food, feces, sentient beings, sages, tathagatas, Bodhisavatts, Jesus, Virgin Mary, Mohammad, the Devil, the King of Heaven, the King of Hell, Heaven, Hell, demons, the 30 Virgins awaiting your martyrs (or terrorists) in Heaven, Satan, angels, 2nd coming, nuclear bomb, total annihilation of the world, Armageddon, the Big Bang, atoms, molecules, DNA, the god particles, Yin and Yang, man, woman, gay, good, bad, neutral, jihad, forms, formlessness, space, big, small, morality, duality, defilement, sin, clean, dirty, enlightenment, the universe, your neighbors, your enemies, your friends, your father, your mom, your wife, your husband, your siblings, your children, your grandchildren, art, Titian, Knox Martin, Shakespeare, Mozart, Beethoven, poetry, music, science, Einstein, Columbus, civilizations, dynasties, Genghis Khan, Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Lincoln, the Holocaust, Jews, Gentiles, infidels, nations,hydrogen bombs…, even the mind itself,– in other words, everything in the universe are but the manifestations of your OWN mind. Nothing really exists, nor do they need to enthrall you in any manner, since nothing is real. It is not just the Bodhidharma’s observation, it is also a truth enunciated by all the great Buddhas and Bodhisavatts before him,– by the Buddha Gautama and Tsonkghapa especially. And they are all geniuses from the human race. They are human geniuses who had walked this same earth as we ourselves do,– not mythological figures fabricated of some idle thinking, forever riding high upon their worshipers’ curious sensations or exotic sentiments. According to these geniuses, none of the phenomena mentioned above are real. Of course no one can prove it by the worldly terms of a cognitive thinking process, designed in the name of science. But why do you need more proofs of such kinds, stemming from self- defeating basis well from the first instance? Isn’t it just one more mental trap to inflate your self-deceptions? You live, you die, and that is all the proofs you are getting already! Isn’t life itself mysterious and magical enough to warrant any of those low- grade, inconclusive, self-deceptive evidences that you have always claimed as first- class scientific evidences, to inflate the ego? So in the final analysis, you must, by all means, see the truth for yourself! In any case, I can only put in this, namely, at the end of a successful spiritual journey, you will definitely find out that only the densest of fools would still insist on seeking a god, or a buddha, for that matter, outside the mind, feeling about your surrounding in total blindness, or frantically grasping at space,– which is nothing but emptiness!

What does the Bodhidharma mean when he says that you will never know your own mind when you deceive yourself? First allow the Alpha Seer to ask you this instead: how do you deceive yourself? Aren’t you deceiving yourself by envisioning a so-called First Cause,– meaning, an Almighty God,– who has created the universe and yourself,– you who have barely evolved from those mouth- gaping, promiscuous monkeys not too long ago, and you are saying that the Almighty God has created a virtual monkey in His image and all that craps??!! Aren’t you deceiving yourself by imagining a Santa Claus kind of character who will come to save your ass from the fire of hell, forgive all your crimes for being a parasite on the planet earth, and deliver you unto the Father’s laps in Heaven, or with Mohammed at Allah’s side, rewarding you with just so many virgins as wives and concubines, or sitting by the side of Jesus Christ in the Last Judgement, with Moses, Mohammad, Abraham at your disposal, and a whole bunch of angels clamoring to be your servants and all??!! Aren’t you deceiving yourself by thinking that without having orgiastic sex,–and VOILA, Jesus Christ is born of the Virgin Mary? Geesus, mafuggar shit!!!!!!!!! who can believe those lies except the stupidest of idiots?!!!!!!!! Yes, there are a million ways by which you can deceive yourself in this miserable existence of yours that you call life,– which is just an opinion! And finally, should I spare those shabby Buddhist monk beggars in yellow robes and such, who are chanting nonsense at your Dad’s funeral while staring at your pocket book greedily?

The great Bodhidharma is saying, you can never see your own nature when you deceive yourself like that. What he means is when you allow self-deception to take place, you won’t have a chance to see your Buddha nature. Why can’t you see your Buddha nature when you deceive yourself like that? Simple: the power of Mara (another metaphor for the unenlightened mind) already has a strangle-hold on you and you can never be free to act. Your mind is not liberated and you are simply conditioned by those craps you called “faith,” and as a result of those wrong actions and defilement your karma can only be getting heavier and heavier and your mind thoroughly fucked !

Follow the instructions of a qualified teacher, according to the Bodhidharma, i.e. one who has found his own mind,– one who has seen his true self; in other words, follow a teacher who has seen his own Buddha nature. NEVER follow one who may be well-versed in all kinds of scriptures, knowledgeable about a million things the Buddhas say, but not wise enough to see his mind, i.e. his Buddha nature! The Bodhidharma is also saying: do not allow yourself to be misled by a blind person,– an impostor, who does not even know his mind himself! Why? because you are blind enough to be led along as a disciple by another blind man!!!!!

Not unlike Matisse’ time-honored statement:”You cannot teach art!” The same can be said about enlightenment! You can’t teach enlightenment either ! However, don’t follow the Alpha Seer, who is a bad example for your kids; or the Dalai Lama, who is anything but a tathagata! Or certain Tibetan, Taiwanese, Thai, or Vietnamese “masters”, who are nothing more than dualist beggars, thieves or con men forever plotting to steal from you! Follow the original scriptures straight from the mind of the Buddha, the Bodhidharma, the 6th Patriarch, or other tathagatas in the journal of Buddhism, realized masters who emphasize the transmission of the mind directly to the mind, in other words, a direct transmission from Buddha nature to Buddha nature!

Once you know your own mind, you will never use it to search for mind, nor using a Buddha to seek another Buddha. In a nutshell, once you know your mind, everything will be set right by itself, every move will be a correct one, every path you take will automatically be an enlightened one; and whatever you do, you will be heading towards the goal of setting your house is in order. Most important, your mind will be set free, liberated,– and all unconditionally!

Keeping this ordinary state of mind well unto the exit of life is vital. When you know your Buddha nature, keeping an undefiled mind, i.e. one that is free of thinking, is in and of itself an unmitigated joy! The only practice you ever need is keep a sane mind from hereon now: i.e. to be aware of every single moment or aspect of your life, watching with intense interest your own activities, like eating, working, painting, the making of poetry or creating of novels, the research science or technologies, traveling, sleeping, having sex, taking a leak,shitting –and what not.

What do the Bodhidharma mean by the 3 realms? They are the realms of greed, anger, and delusion. With greed, your future will be in the realm of hungry ghosts. With anger, the realm of hell will be your lot, and with delusion, the realm of animals will be your fate. Just treat those three realms as the three states of mind, i.e. treat the hungry ghost realm, the hell realm and the animal realm as mere metaphors, since they do not actually exist! They are not real, and like everything else,they are but the three manifestations of your mind!

When you can train your mind so well that greed, anger and delusion cannot touch you in any way, and what that means is that you might already have attained the same mental state as the Buddha,–one that is just as perfect,–one where the seeds of birth and death have been deleted, and you have attained! Your being is like the Void itself,–totally without a cause. When that happens the force of karma is unable to touch you. Why? because you have chopped down the root of birth and death, you have kept the seeds of birth and death at bay. The seeds of birth and death are the seeds of suffering. Why? the root is no more, and the cause for birth and death will not ever arise again.

Without seeing your own mind, you will most likely fail to locate the incentive in keeping a constantly aware mind,– a mind that is liberated of all thinking, therefore, a mind that has ceased the arising of birth and death… . Like Krishnamurti said,” Thinking is your enemy!” Keeping an undefiled mind is so simple: Just watch your thinking all day long, relax, don’t think of fostering merits, good karma or accomplishments; and finally, no attachment!
Remember: only a human being with the right composition and content of karma may enjoy this singular privilege of knowing his/her mind, and that is just a handful of enlightened human beings, one among millions! You cannot expect an animal to understand its own mind,–NO WAY!!!! nor can you expect a Jesuit priest, a Zoroastrian, or an imam to understand his own mind. Therefore you must not allow this window of opportunity to pass you by without a fight!

You may encounter a million metaphors acquiring the language of the Buddha, but simply know that they are just metaphors, and they are not real at all. EMPTINESS is the real name for the Dharma! Since none of what you see or experience as subjects, objects or phenomena have their real nature,all I can tell you is that they are just the mind’s manifestations. It is only when you begin to grasp at them that a big mistake is made. Just fancy a fool grasping at the images of a movie, that is what grasping at emptiness is all about. It is idiotic; it is comical, and a total waste of time and effort!

Nothing whatsoever in this world is real, — ALL is empty!

Simply do not grasp at anything: that includes your money, your properties, your job, your love, your hate, your loved ones, your family, your tribe, your morality, your race, your culture, your tradition, your country, your people, your son, your daughter, your grandchildren, your art, your religion, the Buddha, the Dharma, and what not.

Folks: Those are the words of two of the greatest masters of all times,–and they studied TITIAN. What they are saying is, black and white, a.k.a. YIN and YANG, is the ultimate essence of ART. Why doesn’t the Alpha Seer say Alpha Art now? Has’t he established that the only thing that can be called ART is ALPHA ART? The academics immediately get offended., especially those from a school next to the MIA, called MCAD.”You are insulting everyone!” “Down with Titian!” They say.
It is TRUE that when you establish something, anything not included in that category will become irrelevant. The Alpha Seer has not tried to insult anyone. If you have found the Alpha Seer offensive, you must first look into your own ego. It is your own ego that is doing the insulting. The Alpha Seer is simply telling the truth. So is the great master Knox Martin, whose work is also represented here. If you cannot see TITIAN, who is the greatest artistic genius of all times,–Titian! You are not seeing the truth. If you can see TITIAN too,–why? CONGRATULATIONS! Why CONGRATULATIONS? because you are one among millions! Not many people see TITIAN. You have to be a genius to see TITIAN!
Now look at the truth from the attached paintings, i.e. the evidence, the black and white, the YIN AND YANG,–whatever name you happen to employ,– to denote the REALITY. Everyone is saying Picasso is great, but no one can tell me why. Every professor is telling you that Cezanne is great, but the next thing he does, he would turn around and tell the world that Andy Warhol is great, Damien Hirst is great, Rauschenberg is ALSO great,… and the list goes on. Yes, I am talking about the academics, the so-called pundits. Such people are doing a DISSERVICE. What they are doing is in fact utterly criminal. With the enviable title of Harvard Professor, or MCAD emeritus professor, they actually cheat the daylight out of you. What they are doing is to turn great art on its head and enroll you in his confidence game, talk you into believing that “…this is art, that is art,– yeah, there you have it, anything can be art, anything at all if you are creative and imaginative enough, there you have it: found object, garbage, even the urinal,–anything at all, isn’t that fabulous about our era?–aren’t we totally diversified? Aren’t we totally inclusive? Isn’t it absolutely gorgeous that everything in the world , anything at all, can be called art? And deep-pocketed fools believe them, because they have such strong titles! They are willing to pay millions for an Andy Warhol, in order to brag to their friends that they have money.

VELAZQUEZ’ MASTERPIECE, LAS MENINAS

When the great painter Knox Martin first saw Velazquez’s Infanta at the Louvre, he was beside himself with joy, as indeed would anyone had he found himself in an ecstatic moment filled with all the wondrous magic that is timeless Beauty! According to the report, Knox was seen ” trembling and exclaiming loudly in expletives and groaning and gesticulating alarmingly” by his French companion… (refer to one of the articles inwww.knoxmartin.com)

Today we are looking at one of the best works by Velazquez, Las Meninas. Viewing a replica of a masterpiece is not the same thing as experiencing the visual pleasure from the real thing. The enormous size of the painting alone can easily overwhelm any viewer, thereby casting upon him a spell of the sublime. However, granted that a page-size replica of the original work has most of its charm dissipated in the said reduction, it is still very much possible to feel the electrifying movements in the master’s original handiwork! You strip bare a painting to its essential “black and white”, even reduce it to a very small version of the original, the major electrifying part always remains faithfully intact. Why? Its Supreme Mathematical Relationship, SMR is at work here. Hence it follows that nothing can be more important in a work of art than the SMR.

Why do our Academia still champion issues as their lingering hope from the dawn of Surrealism to the heydays of Post-modernism then?– Endless discourses, thousands of publications, hundreds of seminars, and of course innumerable resources and public fundings and generous donations,– all squandered in the glorious name of art or culture!–And the happiest clowns in the circus?–the biggest show since the Barnum?–much bigger,– from local Star Tribune Mary A, MCAD Diane M; U of M  J. B. to Columbia U’s  Arthur D, with their countless illegitimate sons and daughters of questionable paternity,– much ado about nothing!

The answer, my friend, is very simple!Those who impose on the world as learned scholars are no more clear eyed than the blind Arabs in a tribe hopelessly lost in a sandstorm,–being inert to all things beautiful, noble or poetic!– For that reason, they must with the utmost urgency, hang onto a work’s narratives or meanings or else they can only hang themselves, as they have nothing else in their tradecraft to fool a even blinder world! They have to find something to hook onto, right?
I have often stressed that the “black and white” in the composition produces the  electrifying magic in soliciting Knox’s sublime reaction to the beauty of Las Meninas. The compositional “black and white” is the predominant factor in assessing the merits of a painting! Its “Black and white” tells us about the Supreme Mathematical Relationships from which is born the essential visual poetry in Las Meninas.

What constitutes “charm” in a painting beside the universal appeal derived from its supreme mathematical relationships in the composition?
When looking at Art, the public, by their viewing habit, generally falls into two categories: They either glance at the art casually, superficially, or they seem to detect things beyond the intended. The viewers in the first instant often succumb to the external, circumstantial charm in the Art, hence missing the big picture that is fundamental to its beauty; whereas the viewers in the second category tend to intellectualize everything presented to them, thereby inventing in their heads the fabrication of their arbitrary whims. Only the Alpha Seers, who can see Art as it is, truly sense its beauty with undiluted pleasure. That was exactly what had caused the crisp awakening in the core of Knox Martin upon his viewing of Velazquez’ Infanta or Las Meninas. That is the only explanation for his public outcry of blissful self-abandon!

“You are not Knox, well, how in the world do you know the way he felt at the moment? and, namely, what had precisely caused his outcry?” Comes the challenge,– to which I plan to reply with precision, ” because I have been in a similar situation, my friend!” We feel satisfied when thirst is quenched or an itch scratched.  That particular kinship for yearning also constitutes a common core which we call humanity! One of the many things that the public look for, i.e. those who tend to intellectualize Art, are the meanings in the painting. When I was at MCAD looking at students’ works, I saw piles upon heavy piles of their work homogeneously sharing a single, wrong-headed focus:the misguided notion that the act of art-making serves the purpose of meanings in the human experience. Out of that wrong headed notion their work all seem to follow the program that art is supposedly for the conveyance of meanings. WRONG! When you look at contemporary art, one is struck by the horror that NOT a single inch of its postmodern domains that fails to employ meaning as the very reason for art’s existence. The true reason for greatness in a masterpiece like Las Meninas is alway bypassed or dismissed as the result of a mass exodus of imagination or the constant chattering of a querulous mind! Thus it is easy to see how seriously astray our postmodern artists and their scholarly allies have been led.

The Alpha Seer is one who awakes to Beauty. Alpha Seers are rare in any period of time.That has been pointed out. His seeing can be as simple as the visual enjoyment of a gemstone. He does not need a legitimate reason to enjoy visual beauty. Yet beauty is complex enough for most people and the bliss of that seeing has been forbidden to many. Many are hopelessly denied access to beauty, since there is no established path to beauty! For that reason, enlightenment must not be taken for granted. Enlightenment does not sit around waiting for you enticingly. One needs to be wise, full humor, humble in attitude and serious in intention. One needs to have a logical mind similar to a scientist’s, and much more. The sentimental dog will never get the bone! One needs to have the feelers out for a beauty promised only in a universe structured in Mathematics. In short, one needs to be well prepared, heart and mind, and spiritually. Verily the breeze will grace whosoever that keeps his window open… .
Beauty is timeless but the musings of our postmodern scholars dwell heavily on the movements of time, which is the offspring of the thought process. Existential issues such as social and gender equity, interpretation of dreams, instability of meanings and generally, issues that call for worthless research in the human psyche. Adulation of the Ego has become the central themes and the purpose for art. To be exact, Ego has become the only subject matter of the postmodern philosophy!

Unfortunately, the universe is without an ego–so an enlightenment upon the beautiful cannot attach to the human ego in any size or shape. Postmodern art is of the mind and of time. They are products of memories. But memories are dead! Alpha Art by contrast, is a sacredness from Supreme Mathematical Relationship, which is sublime and timeless.
It is true that there is a strong hint of narratives, or even one of  fantastic drama, loaded with biographical / historic data in Las Meninas, but Velazquez might have deliberately created that excuse in order to enlarge the market appeal of his art as a commodity of desire. There really is no need to over-emphasize those external, circumstantial factors as long as the dynamics governing the S M R are in place.

One of art historians’ favorite stories about this painting is that Velazquez painted his motif from the reflection of a great mirror situated in front of his subjects and himself. Now it has become my major complaint about the academics whenever this piece of Las Meninas feature is brought up. They have told it like the oldest story in the bible, deeply engaged in the form and matter of a fart!

Of course it stinks: can’t you smell it, professors?

IT IS HARDER AND HARDER TO GET THE GREAT KNOX MARTIN (www.knoxmartin.com) TO SAY SOMETHING THESE DAYS, LET ALONE SAYING IT WITH ENTHUSIASM AND DELIGHT. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO MAKE HIM SPEAK, OR MAYBE SMILE A LITTLE FOR THAT MATTER,– AND THAT IS WHEN YOU SHOW HIM A MASTERPIECE THAT HE HAS NEVER SEEN BEFORE (quite an EXTRAORDINARY feat considering the fact that he had begun to view art and understood it like a song before most of us here were even born!)

 

AFTER YOU HAVE INSPECTED THE FOLLOWING  STILL- LIFEs  CAREFULLY AND COMPARED THEM WITH THE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE FLAWS ACTUALLY LIE.  AMAZINGLY,  IT MAY BE JUST A FEW TINY LINES BEING TRAPPED  IN THE WRONG SPOT IN THE COMPOSITION CARELESSLY,–BUT THAT IS ENOUGH TO CREATE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH. AND THAT IS HOW PRECISE REAL ART IS!

 

EVEN THOUGH THE DEMONSTRATION OF THE ALPHA SEER’S PAINTING TECHNIQUE MAY NOT BE POWERFUL ENOUGH TO CONVINCE SOME  WE SHOULD BE CONCERNED INSTEAD ABOUT HOW IT MAY REDUCE SKEPTICISM FOR THE SMALL PORTION OF THE POPULATION WHO ARE  BRILLIANT ENOUGH TO COMPREHEND THE DEMONSTRATION, AND OF COURSE THE DIFFICULT TASK IN THE PROCESS OF CREATING A REAL MASTERPIECE.

 

YOU REALLY DO NOT NEED TO BE AN ARTISTIC GENIUS TO UNDERSTAND THE ALPHA SEER’S DEMONSTRATIONS, JUST BE PATIENT AND PAY ENOUGH ATTENTION. THEN PERHAPS WITH OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORT, I.E. THE ALPHA SEER’S DEMONSTRATION, THE GREAT MASTER’S EXPRESSION OF DELIGHT UPON SPOTTING A REAL MASTERPIECE, TOGETHER WITH YOUR ATTENTION AND PATIENCE,– WE MAY STILL HAVE A CHANCE TO HARNESS THE REVIVAL OF GREAT ART IN THE WORLD,–PRECIPITATING A NEW RENAISSANCE EVEN.

 

LIKE THE GREAT WHALES, REAL ART IS DYING FAST; AND IT IS EXPECTED TO BE WIPED OUT FROM THE FACE OF THE WORLD IN THE NEXT 50 YEARS, IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL. LET US FACE IT: LIFE WOULD BE VERY BORING AND MUNDANE FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS WITH THE LIKE OF MEDIOCRE “ARTISTS” SUCH AS ANDY WARHOL AND DAMIEN HIRST ETC. THRIVING.

 

OR YOU MAY BE ASKING: WHAT IS THAT TO ME? I GET NO BENEFIT FROM CONSERVING GREAT TRADITIONS FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS. WELL, LET ME TELL YOU WHY: WE ALL NEED TO DO OUR PART, HOWEVER TINY. WHY? SIMPLY BECAUSE WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS, AND WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

THE THEME OF YIN AND YANG
